A matter of honour…

Have you ever wanted to have a sword fight with a friend (or enemy) but just don’t have the room to swing your steel?

Perchance the need to settle an argument but the prince has strictly forbidden brawling on the streets of fair Verona, where we lay our scene?

Then Prise De Fer is the game for you!

A pocket-sized 18 card game from the sword masters of Green Cloak Creative that replicates the excitement of a duel to resolve any conflict regardless of the location!

Players take turns to lay down Attack or Defence cards in a bid to cut & parry and win an unanswered hit before their cards run out…

How it’s Played…

Knowing is half the battle

There are two copies of each of the five basic targets, which are used to attack or defend the named location. An attack to a specific target must be parried with the same number, or by a card that can defend that number…

But what do these numbers mean? Well, in certain styles of sword-play, locations on the body are assigned numbers for ease of description as shown in the chart above.

In addition to the basic cards…

Attack Cards

Thrust High/Low can be blocked or parried by more than one type of defensive card, while the Feint allows you to take back a previous attack and instead play an alternative. En Garde however, determines which player is on the attack first…

Defence Cards

Footwork is a universal parry, while Envelop and Half Bind allow you to parry more than one target and then give you control of the fight to play your own attack cards. Riposte also takes control of the fight, but only after any other defensive cards are played

Let the battle begin…

Shuffle the 18 cards well and then deal 7 cards to both players, leaving the remaining 4 aside…

The En Garde determines the Attacker – if no one holds this reshuffle until it is in hand

The Player holding the En Garde will begin the attack and start the duel by placing it between both players. They must now choose an Attack Card which is placed in front of them and await a countering card…

The opponent must find and play a card to deal with that attack (such as shown.)

If parried the fight continues with a new Attack Card, but… if not… the Attacker wins the point and all 18 cards are reshuffled and the fight continues

The first Player to 5 points is the victor

An elegant… game… for a more civilized age!

Pris de Fer from Green Cloak Creative is a fantastic 18 card title which is as entertaining as much as it is a solution to squabbles and perhaps even dare we say it… World Peace…

Through 18 simple cards, each featuring either an Attacking or Defensive action you will be drawn into an engaging back and forth duel to win the elusive victory point and be the winner in whatever debacle caused this fight in the first place.

Though the game is a condensed affair of 7 cards in hand to attack and deflect, there’s some neat strategy in the form of defensive cards that if played well, can allow you to feint an attack, or parry a blow and take charge of the fight.

Timewise this is a short, swift and decisive matter regardless of how well you handle a blade, the hand limit of just 7 cards means you will win or die within minutes – so a recommended 5 points overall is the advised length of battle.

As a production, this is an early stage version of the game and there is additional artwork to follow, but the art is a period piece and styled on the manuscripts at that time which gives an even more thematic experience as you can slam these cards with vigour and their distressed nature will only be the better for it.

Finally a game where sleeve protectors aren’t advised!

In all, Prise de Fer isn’t expected to be an overly produced title – but it certainly is a well devised, compact game that’s pocket portable and practically perfect for settling debates in every way.

Coming to Kickstarter in July 2021 – Prise de Fer is a fantastic way to settle any social discord without bloodshed but plenty of ooh la la!
