A puzzly tile-laying game of quilts and cats.

In Calico, players compete to sew the coziest quilt as they collect and place patches of different colors and patterns.

Each quilt has a particular pattern that must be followed, and players are also trying to create color and pattern combinations that are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also able to attract the cuddliest cats!

How it Plays…

Calico is a game designed by Kevin Russ with gorgeous artwork from Beth Sobel and brought to you from the creators of Point Salad, Flatout Games.

Each player is given a quilt mat and goal tiles; selecting 3 of these tiles they will arrange them onto the quilt in the marked spaces.

Dealt 2 random tiles to start their hand players allocate tiles onto the board and new tiles are drawn for the next round.

Each placed patch tile is checked as to whether a button can be sewn on, or if a cat is attracted to their blanket.

Scoring…

To qualify for a button is as simple as connecting 3 of the same coloured pattern tiles and then assigning a button of that colour to the patch.

If all 6 coloured buttons are collected then a unique Rainbow button is awarded.

(And don’t forget the border tiles also count towards your goal of 3 matching tiles…)

Cats however, we’ll they aren’t fussed about your colours, instead they focus on pretty patterns and each cat has a preference before they will lay on your blanket…

Each cat attracted adds additional points at the end of the game.

Finally, each of the goal tiles has a unique combination of patterns or colours to achieve that goal and you must match that sequence in the 6 spaces that surround the tile in order to unlock that goal.

Depending on which of the goals you aim for will determine the points assigned to that goal…

Where the goals shake up is with Pattern combos such as AA-BB-C & D – meaning you have to have 2 pairs of a colour/pattern (AA & BB) followed by 2 seperate patterns or colours (C & D) – depending on which of the goals you are aiming for.

The game ends once the final quilt tile is placed down and all points are counted.

Our Thoughts…

Calico has been on our radar ever since we teamed up with Jonny Pac Cantin (https://www.jonnypac.com) working with the phenomenal Merchants Cove, and we were introduced to Calicos designer Kevin Russ – so we’ve been eager quite some time waiting for this game to come around…

The game style allows you to decide how to achieve your goals and rewards you accordingly for effort. But it’s even more versatile and it should be highlighted that a fantastic feature is that the game can be simplified for younger audiences by simply flipping the goal tiles and focusing instead on sewing buttons as a colour matching game.

Equally the game can be toughened by flipping cat tiles to make them more selective of their preferences and heighten their expectations of a purr-fect quilt before they will lay on it!

Lastly, Solo Mode features for lonesome winter nights and this all beautifully wraps up a stunning game that is sure to be a classic for years to come.

I’m sure its obvious by now that both game style and visuals have caught our heart and it’s a fantastic family & friends game.

Available on Kickstarter in October from Flatout Games (creators of Point Salad) Calico is designed by Kevin Russ with gorgeous artwork from Beth Sobel – it’s definitely a game to add to your collection!
